River Tubing Fiji is a local family-owned operation based 5 minutes up from Navua town — as close to the source as a tour gets. The day takes you into the Navua River’s most dramatic stretch: a 1-hour-20-minute longboat ride through deep basalt gorges, past cascading waterfalls and highland rainforest, up to the Namosi Highlands. Then a village visit, a plantation walk, a waterfall swim, a proper riverside lunch, and approximately 6km of tubing back downstream through gentle rapids.

Guests staying at Pacific Harbour or the Coral Coast have the shortest drive; guests from Nadi/Denarau face a roughly 3-hour round trip that is consistently described as worth it by those who make the commitment.

The itinerary

Arrival and briefing at Navua base

After hotel pickup and the drive to Navua, all guests complete a waiver form and receive a safety briefing and life jackets before departure. Life jackets are worn throughout the water sections.

Longboat ride upriver (1 hour 20 minutes)

The longboat departs upstream from the Navua base. This is the defining section of the day: the Navua River is enclosed by high basalt gorge walls and dense native forest. Waterfalls fall directly off cliffs into the river. The water shifts from clear shallows over gravel beds to deep channels between dark rock walls.

Your guide narrates the landscape throughout — river ecology, village communities along the banks, bird sightings, and the transition from lowland Fiji into the Namosi Highlands. A separate guide manages the longboat through the river’s meandering rapids; their navigation of the deeper channels and larger rocks is consistently noticed and appreciated by guests.

Namosi Highlands village visit

The longboat arrives at a highland village where you’ll spend time with the community. The village visit covers daily life in the highlands, traditional structures, and Fijian customs — the guides who live in or near these communities explain what you’re seeing in terms that make it feel human rather than presentational.

Photography: ask before photographing people. Many guests choose to be present without a camera during this section; the guides are comfortable either way.

Plantation walk and waterfall swim

From the village, a guided walk through a tropical plantation leads to the waterfall. The swim is in a natural pool at the base — cool, clear highland water. Most guests describe this as the most refreshing swim of their Fiji trip.

Footwear: reef shoes or closed sandals that can get wet are strongly recommended for both the plantation walk and the tubing section.

Riverside Fijian lunch

Lunch is served by the river before the tubing section begins. The meal is prepared using fresh local ingredients: chicken, fish, salads, fresh fruit, and local root crops and vegetables. It’s a substantial, satisfying Fijian spread in a setting you’ve earned.

Tubing downstream (~6km)

Guests float approximately 6km back down the Navua River in inner tubes, interspersed with gentle rapids. It’s unhurried — the pace of the river rather than an adrenaline run. The same gorge walls, waterfalls, and rainforest you rode up through now pass at tube speed.

Non-tubing option: guests who prefer not to tube can travel back by other means — confirm the option with the operator when booking.

Practical notes

The drive from Nadi: a family group of seven described the experience as “absolutely fantastic despite a bit of rain and the long commute” — the phrase “worth it” appears across reviews with notable consistency. Factor the drive into your planning and depart with that expectation set.

From Pacific Harbour or the Coral Coast: the drive is short and this tour is an obvious choice for a day out from mid-island or eastern Coral Coast resorts.

Rainy conditions: the tour runs in rain. Wet season makes the gorge more dramatic. The plantation walk gets muddier. The tubing gets wetter. Most guests love it regardless.

A portion of proceeds from River Tubing Fiji supports Sabata Village directly — guests frequently mention this as part of why the experience feels meaningful.

FAQs

Is tubing scary?

No. The Navua River tubing is gentle rapids interspersed with calm stretches — described consistently as fun rather than frightening. It’s more like a long float with a few exciting sections than a whitewater run.

Can the 5-and-under children do anything?

Yes — all activities except the tubing itself are described as safe for under 5s. The longboat ride, village visit, and waterfall can all be enjoyed with young children.
