If scuba diving has been on the list but a full certification course feels like more commitment than a holiday allows, an introductory dive is the practical middle ground. You don’t need a certification, prior experience, or special fitness. You need to be comfortable in water and able to follow instructions — the instructor manages the rest.

This experience runs as part of the operator’s regular daily dive boat from Denarau, so you’re diving alongside certified divers in an actual dive environment, not in a controlled pool.

At a glance

  • Duration: ~5 hours
  • Dives: 2 introductory dives
  • Certification required: none — this is a try-dive experience, not a certification course
  • Maximum group size: small group (typically 8 or fewer)
  • Minimum age: 10 years on most listings
  • Instructor certification: SSI
  • Pickup: Denarau resorts at approximately 8:30am; Nadi and Wailoaloa-area hotels earlier (confirm when booking)

How the day runs

Pickup and check-in at Port Denarau: the dive operator’s kiosk is inside the Port Denarau Passenger Terminal. If you’re not being picked up from your hotel, make your own way there and find the kiosk before departure.

Medical declaration: before entering the water, all introductory divers complete a medical declaration. Standard questions about cardiovascular health, respiratory conditions, medications, and ear health. If you’re unsure whether a health condition is relevant, check with your doctor before booking — ear equalisation problems are the most common issue that arises on the day.

Briefing and equipment fitting: your SSI instructor covers the core skills — how to breathe through the regulator, how to equalise ear pressure, the hand signals, and what to do if anything feels wrong. The process is designed to be reassuring rather than overwhelming.

Shallow water training: instead of a pool session, introductory training happens in shallow water beside the reef. Your instructor controls your buoyancy and descent; your job is to breathe slowly and steadily and stay calm. Most people describe the transition from “nervous at the surface” to “relaxed underwater” as happening within the first few minutes.

Two dives: once you’ve demonstrated you’re comfortable, you’ll complete two guided dives with the instructor immediately beside you. Fiji’s dive sites near Denarau offer good visibility and warm water (~27°C year-round), making the conditions forgiving for first-timers.

What’s included

  • All scuba equipment (wetsuit, BCD, regulator, mask, fins, tank)
  • SSI-certified instructor for the full experience
  • Two introductory dives
  • Boat transport to the dive sites

What to bring

Swimwear, towel, and a dry bag for valuables. Motion sickness medication if you’re prone — take it before boarding the dive boat, not after. Sunscreen (apply well before entering the water; reef-safe formulas are the better choice).

No-fly time after diving

Scuba diving and flying don’t mix safely without adequate surface interval. The standard guideline is to wait at least 12–18 hours after a single dive day before flying. If your departure flight is the same day as your dive, confirm the timing with your operator and follow their specific guidance.

For couples where one person is certified

This is a common scenario: one half of a couple holds a dive qualification and wants to continue diving; the other is trying scuba for the first time. Most operators on this format can accommodate both — the certified diver joins the main dive with the divemaster while the introductory diver works with the SSI instructor. Confirm this arrangement when booking.

What travelers say

Reviews consistently highlight the patience of the instructor as the most important factor. Nervous divers who follow instructions and breathe steadily consistently describe the experience as one of the most memorable of their Fiji trip. The small group size means individual attention is genuine rather than perfunctory.

FAQs

Is this a certification?

No — this is an introductory experience (sometimes called a “try-dive” or “discover scuba diving” session). You will not receive an SSI or PADI certification from this activity. If you want a certification, you need a full Open Water course (typically 3–4 days).

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You need to be comfortable in the water and able to stay calm underwater with equipment on your face. Strong swimming ability isn’t required because the instructor manages your movement. If you’re uncertain, mention your swimming level when booking and the operator can advise.

What if I panic underwater?

Your instructor is immediately beside you throughout both dives. The correct response to panic is to signal to the instructor, who will assist your ascent. The briefing covers this in detail. Many first-time divers experience a moment of heightened alertness on the descent; the instructor anticipates this and manages the pace accordingly.
